Shifting Meanings Within Images

Within modern internet culture, we are starting to see instances where images that originally become circulated online are turning up remixed for different purposes. Take my example of the classic D.A.R.E T-shirt campaign that has been around since millennial's were in grade school. The campaign called for a call to action, to help kids stay off of abusing drugs. It was only a matter of time before underground pop culture played a remix on the campaign, with many different cannons such as the one above stating, "To resist drugs. Those are mine.". Taking a remix in a clever way, exploiting the drug culture and creating another meaning to an already popular image campaign.

Another example at the shifting meaning between images one can find hovering about the internet is the infamous Obama campaign poster reading "HOPE". One can find various contextual meanings that play off of this image. After some research through online threads, i found this image altered to read "NOPE", "MISS ME YET", and so on. Depending on the morals or beliefs of the creator, one can pass on different political meanings, and one could even take on different meanings on the original context just by the situation that pertains to the popular poster.
We live in an age in time that finds a remixed version to almost any popular or grossing icon, image, object, or agency. At this point it's not surprising that almost anything can be fabricated to have a different meaning or use.
